Age-restricted communities in New England are on the rise with retirement communities in Connecticut being one of the three hottest spots. Many national and local builders are busy building retirement communities in Connecticut. Active adults will find also find towns that will welcome them - from Avon to Oxford, Southbury, to Willimantic. You can live near the Long Island Sound in Madison or Old Saybrook, or even closer to the Rhode Island border in seaport towns like Mystic, Niantic, or Stonington. The Newington and Wallingford areas near Hartford have many retirement communities either built or under construction. Upstate there are rural towns like Sharon, Washington, and Pomfret where there is always something going on, even if it is natural beauty.

Connecticut is  the 4th most densely populated state. Called the "Constitution State" or the "Nutmeg state", Connecticut has a long history dating from early colonial times. Interior portions of Connecticut have a humid continental climate, while other parts, especially the Connecticut shoreline, have a humid subtropical climate with seasonal extremes tempered by proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.  Winters are generally considered to be cold, with average temperatures ranging from 31°F. Southeast to 23°F in the northwest in January. The average yearly snowfall is about 25–100" across the state, with higher totals in the northwest. Spring has variable temperatures with frequent rainfall. Summer is hot and humid throughout the state. Fall months are mild and bring colorful foliage across the state in October and November. During hurricane season, tropical cyclones occasionally affect the region. Thunderstorms are most frequent during the summer, occurring on average 30 times annually. Get a glimpse of earlier times as you walk through one of Connecticut's covered bridges.  Enjoy a day of fishing and a picnic along the Salmon River. If you are an adventurer and enjoy the scenic beauty and character of New England as well as its proximity to New York City and Boston, you may want to join makes one of the many young, active retirees who are selecting Connecticut as their best place to retire. But before you make your final decision, make sure to visit the area you are considering at least twice, once in the summer and once again in the fall before you make your final decision on whether or not to make one of the retirement communities in Connecticut your home.

Retirees who once might have moved to Florida or Arizona are making decisions based more on family and social connections, and thus are finding some appealing options in their backyards. Retirees to Guilford and neighboring towns like Madison are often transplants from New York City and its environs. Some kept a summer home in the area and then chose to settle full time in retirement. Some are moving closer to family, and others are refugees of the more costly and congested New York bedroom communities of Connecticut’s Fairfield County, such as Westport and Greenwich, or Westchester County, as in the case of the Henningsons. If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, Southbury, Niantic and Middlebury have a lot of new retirement communities popping up. In the southwest corner of the state, in the town of Oxford, you’ll find one of the largest retirement communities in Connecticut. The Village of Oxford Greens is a fairly new upscale retirement community with access to a nearby golf course built by one of the largest developers of retirement housing in the country. There are over 150 new retirement communities that have popped up over the state in the past few years.
